Purple Heart
Awarded to Ex-Cal Cager Captain Dan Lufkin, the University of California's basketball captain in 1964, was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received during the recent Viet Cong offensive in Long Binh, Viet- nam. A native of Alameda, the 26-year old Army officer was wounded in the hand and right thigh by mortar shrapnel as the Viet Cong invaded II Field Force Headquarters Jan 31. Lufkin is currently opera- ations officer for the Assistant Chief of Staff, G5 Section, in Long Binh. Prior to this assignment, he had been the Army liaison officer with the Vietnamese Nat- ional Olympic basketball team and had supervised its training. Recovering quickly from the wounds, Lufkin, a three-time All-Army basketball player, is expected to compete again this year. He is also a recipient of a Bronze Star Medal. |
