    Captain Dan Lufkin, the
  University of California's
  basketball captain in 1964, was
  awarded the Purple Heart
  Medal for wounds received
  during the recent Viet Cong
  offensive in Long Binh, Viet-
  nam.
    A native of Alameda, the
  26-year old Army officer was
  wounded in the hand and right
  thigh by mortar shrapnel as
  the Viet Cong invaded II Field
  Force Headquarters Jan 31.
    Lufkin is currently opera-
  ations officer for the Assistant
  Chief of Staff, G5 Section, in
  Long Binh.
    Prior to this assignment, he
  had been the Army liaison officer
  with the Vietnamese Nat-
  ional Olympic basketball
  team and had supervised its
  training.
    Recovering quickly from the
  wounds, Lufkin, a three-time
  All-Army basketball player, is
  expected to compete again
  this year. He is also a recipient
  of a Bronze Star Medal.
